Getting Acquainted With Your Desktop
Class 104 - Menu Bar
The Menu bar is a permanently displayed strip spread horizontally across the top of the screen or window. When the mouse is clicked on an item in the menu bar, a drop-down menu appears. This gives you the ability to tell a program to perform certain tasks. The appearance of each program's menu bar varies. Let's take a look at a few different ones. By the way, I've included a lot of examples, so this page is long, but very easy to learn.
Common Menu Bar Commands

1- The most commonly seen commands are:
- File
- Edit
- View
- Favorites
- Tools
- Help
These are the ones that are seen in Internet Explorer and should be in your window right now as you are viewing this page.

2- Above is the menu bar in Windows Explorer. Notice it's the same 6 commands.
|
|
|
3- In the Microsoft Word Menu Bar there are a few more commands. Favorites is no longer a command, but we've added Insert, Format, Table, Window, Adobe and Acrobat. The last 2 are because I have that program on my computer.

4- Here we have the Microsoft Excel Menu Bar, quite similar to the previous one for Word, however a new command of Data has been added.
|
|
|
5- And now, the Internet Explorer Menu Bar that you are most likely also seeing in your computer window, unless you are using a different browser.
|
What Do Each of These Commands Do
When you click on any of the commands in the Menu Bar a drop down box will appear allowing you to carry out a specific task. Just as the commands in the menu bar are different from program to program, so are the items in the drop down boxes. For most of this training, I am focusing on what you will find in the Internet Explorer browser. The following graphics will give you a sense of what you will most likely see on your computer. Details of each of these tasks will be thoroughly discussed in the Intermediate and Advanced Classes.
File Command

6- This first example is from the Microsoft Word program. When you click on the File Command a drop down box similar to this one will appear on your screen. It will initially come up with the tasks most recently used. Here you see that last used were:
- Save
- Save As
- Page Setup
- Print
Below that are the Microsoft Word Documents that I last saved, modified or worked with. And, then, you see the icon with the 2 downward arrows. This means that there are more items listed under that. Click on the arrows.

7- This is now the expanded version of the File Menu Drop Down Box. You see the same items as before, however a lot more are added. |
8- This is the File Menu Command from Internet Explorer and similar to what you will see if you click on File right now in your own Browser Window, if you are using Internet Explorer 6.0. The items listed here are quite different from those we just saw in Word. |
Edit Command
9- Click on the Edit Command in the Menu Bar and you will find the options to Copy, Paste, Select All and others. |
View Command

10- Click on View Command and there are a number of choices. Any items with an arrow pointing to the right means you can make more choices regarding that item. In this diagram, I clicked on Toolbars, which brings up another window to the right.
- Those with checkmarks are ones that have been enabled to work with my program.
- Those without checkmarks are not currently being used.
- Those that are "greyed out" are loaded onto my computer, however they've been told to not be allowed at this time through another area that's covered in the Advanced Trainings. This was done to optimize computer performance.

11- Here is another item to choose from within the View Command. Someone recently asked me how to make the text on their screen bigger... Well, here is where you do that. Click on Text Size right now in your own window, then click on Largest to test it. So for those of us with "Mature Eyes," we can take off our glasses, and read the screen just fine. To get back to where this was, click on View, Text Size and then Medium.

Favorites Command
12- Click on Favorites to save websites that you would like to come back to on a regular basis. In fact, go do that right now, and it will save this page in ScyberBiz to your Internet Browser Favorites area. Also click on Favorites to quickly find a Website that's been previously saved. The Intermediate and Advanced Trainings cover in detail how to organize this area. |
Tools Command

13- Click on Tools. It becomes highlighted in blue, and the drop down box appears. Notice the top 2 items have arrows pointing to the right. That means each of them have another set of items that you can choose from. Again, there is extended learning available for these "tools" in our Intermediate and Advanced classes. |
Help Command
14- Here we have selected the Help Command and the drop down box gives us a number of options to choose from. |
Extra Tip
Next to the Menu Bar in your browser you will see open blank space - to the right of Help.
15- Right Click in the empty space and this drop down box will appear. This allows you to immediately change the looks of the top of your screen. Click on the areas with checkmarks and they will now disappear from your screen.
Many times people have said that they can't find their Address Bar. Most often, come here to check and the checkmark is probably gone.
There is another reason for its disappearance which you will learn in the Intermediate Online Trainings.
Another time when you would use this is when you want your viewing area of your screen larger, like when watching a movie or video and part of it is being cut off. Unclick some of these, which will remove the bars at the top of your screen, but when you are finished, come back to turn them on again, or you'll wonder later what happened to them. |
